Name: Common Name: Saw palmetto Botanical Name: Serenoa repens
Family: Arecaceae
Parts Used: Berries, seeds
Sources
Saw palmetto is a palm that grows mainly along
the East coast of the United States. There are large plantations
in southern part of the coast, Florida. In Africa and Europe there
grown a closely related palm with similar contains. The active ingredient
comes from the oil extracted from berries at the tops of trees.
In Europe, products sold to treat prostate enlargement contain at
least 85 percent purified oils.
Chemical Component
Fatty acids (caproic, caprylic, capric,
lauric, palmitic, and oleic acids), beta-sitosterol and ferulic
acid.
Use Recommendations
Early stage of Benign Prostate Hypertrophy
and Prostate adenoma.
In clinical studies, Saw Palmetto has two different effects on
the prostate gland. The first, Serenoa has a blocking action on
the conversion process of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone
(DHT). DHT is the hormone that makes the prostatic cells grow fast.
Blocking the DHT, on the contrary, prevent the growth of individual
prostatic cells. The other action of the Serenoa is anti-inflammatory,
particularly working in the prostate. Both actions combined to reduce
the size of prostate and relieve the symptoms of BPH.
Concerns
Using Serenoa on BPH based on its action of blocking
the Testosterone converted to DHT. But it also found that Serenoa
interfered with the action of testosterone, one of them is libido.
In a way Serenoa is an aphrodisiac, but also could be an anti-aphrodisiac.
Beta-sitosterol, which is also contained in the oil from the berries,
behaves like a very weak female sex hormone, estrogen. That might
made the female's breast grow after taken certain amount of Saw
Palmetto.
Precautions
Make sure that the symptom of difficulty,
pain or frequency of urination is caused by a benign lesion in the
prostate (benign hypertrophy or adenoma) not by a malignancy before
the use of Saw Palmetto for a treating purpose. Physical examinations,
ultrasound and blood test of PSA (prostate specific antigen) are required
for a proper diagnosis. Saw Palmetto is rather safe to use and no
reports of toxicity are available.
Dosage
1 to 2 grams per day of the dried berries
or 320 milligrams per day of the extract is suggested.
Summary
There is good evidence that regular
use of Saw Palmetto can relieve the symptoms of Benign Prostate
Hypertrophy. The effect may be rather slow but it is a natural remedy
without shown toxicity.
Interesting Facts
Many men after their 50 years of age, suffer some
degree of difficulty or frequency of urination. Most of the reasons
is due to the enlargement of prostate gland, an condition called
Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH). The prostate gland is located
below the urinary bladder and wrap around the urethra, the lowest
part of the urine passage. An enlargement of this gland causes partial
or even obstruction in the later phase, of the passage of urine.
The main suffering is it has to spend a long time to finish the
urination. Many times also should exercise a lot of force to complete
this mission. Urination became a terrified event to the daily live
of a BPH patient. For many years the berries of Saw Palmetto were
used as a diuretic and as a treatment for the symptoms of urinary
tract infections. They were not very effective and had been dropped
from the National Formulary. Even though physicians lost interest
in the plant, claims that it could reduce the enlargement of the
prostate and gcould cause women's breasts to grow have been circulating
for years. It is also claimed that Serenoa is an aphrodisiac.
