Sweaty, Numb, and All Dried Up: The Joys of Menopause for the Sexually Active

A woman going through menopause wonders if herbal remedies can help reverse some of the hormonal symptoms that affect her sex life.
Case #:1160
Concern:

I am 53 years old, and I have had two children. I am now in menopause, and I have very bad hot flashes, very bad night sweats, and very bad sweats with any kind of kissing and/or sexual stimulation. I also have clitoris/G-spot damage from masturbation and horseback riding, which caused numbness and orgasm dysfunction.

  1. I want to stop the profuse sweating with sex, the hot flashes, and the night sweats.
  2. I want to have sexual orgasms again (I have none or very minimal orgasms). My vagina is dry too.
  3. I want to restore a younger-looking and tighter vagina for better orgasms.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Discussion:

Even though menopause signals the end of a woman's capacity to bear children, and childbirth can decrease elasticity in the vagina over the years, there is no reason why these things should prevent you from continuing to enjoy a great sex life. Our society is gradually moving away from the assumption that menopausal women should relinquish their interest in sex. In this day and age, many of the symptoms of menopause and perimenopause can be controlled or reduced. We owe these advances to a more sophisticated understanding of the reproductive and endocrine systems, as well as an increased respect for women's sexual health and wellbeing throughout their lives.
Behind Your Symptoms

Vaginal insensitivity, hot flashes, night sweats, and decreased vaginal lubrication are some of the most common symptoms of menopause. As the ovaries begin to function less consistently, the hypothalamus and other adrenal glands produce sudden surges of estrogen in an attempt to regulate them. These fluctuations of estrogen levels in the bloodstream can cause blood vessels to constrict and dilate, producing the sensation of heat rushing to the face and neck. The rush of heat may be accompanied by sweating or chills.
Estrogen and progesterone at the correct ratios also play a vital role in maintaining vaginal sensation and regulating orgasmic response. Sexual arousal and a satisfying climax both require the right balance of hormones, and menopause greatly alters that balance. Reduced estrogen causes vaginal tissues to begin breaking down and lose some of their elasticity, as well as some of their normal supply of lubricating fluids. Altered sex hormone levels can also cause the erectile tissues in the clitoris and G-spot to become more vulnerable to temporary sensation loss following stress (which includes sexual stimulation). This can lead to increased orgasm difficulty or problems maintaining arousal during sex.
Herbal and Home Remedies

A wide variety of natural, noninvasive strategies are available for minimizing the symptoms of menopause. Since many factors affect hormonal balance, including diet, frequent exercise, sleep quality, and stress level, you may be able to improve your symptoms through simple lifestyle changes. Regular pelvic floor exercises (Kegels) can give you better control of your vaginal muscles and orgasms. You can also try popular herbal remedies that are believed to decrease menopausal symptoms by raising estrogen levels. (TRY: Natural Solution to Combat Against Menopause)
Note: Always speak with your doctor before starting herbal supplements, because some herbs can interact with other medications you may be taking. Women who have had breast cancer should exercise caution when starting isoflavone supplements, since these "plant estrogens" can mimic the effects of naturally occurring estrogen.

What to do

Discovery of Natural Solutions To Menopause

During menopause, the ovaries do little to alter hormone balances. Menopausal women should adjust their diets to be rich in whole, natural, unprocessed foods, such as fresh or organic fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, seeds, nuts, and healthy...
