Say Goodbye to Energy, Erections and Libido: Conditions Like Hypothyroidism Affect Testosterone and Take Away from Normal Body Functions

His once admirable health took a nosedive when he turned 56. That’s when his body underwent abrupt changes, not the least of which was lost erections. He does not achieve any degree of hardness and therefore cannot make love to his wife. The rest of the story is that he’s not very interested in sex – his loss of energy is equal only to his loss of libido.
Case #: 2073
Concern:

Throughout my 30s and 40s, I considered myself a pretty healthy guy. This continued up until my 56th birthday, when for no apparent reason, my hair started to thin and I put on weight. Then my energy plummeted. The final straw is that I can no longer make love to my wife because I can’t achieve an erection. I don’t get hard at all, even during foreplay. Nor do I really want to have sex. I don’t know if this is because I’m completely void of energy, or if I have another issue going on. I’m too embarrassed at this point to see a doctor. I mean, what guy doesn’t want to and can’t have sex when his wife is lying naked beside him? I appreciate your help.
Discussion:

Father Time is not kind to men or women. As the years pass, skin sags, hair turns gray and muscles lose definition. Even the brain gets a little muddled as memories fade and cognitive abilities dull. The loss of normal sexual functions seems to be icing on the cake – it’s just one more unsavory item to add to the grocery list of problems.
The Male Perspective of Hypothyroidism

Because of natural changes to the body, men lose testosterone as they age. By the time he’s in his 60s or 70s, a man’s hormone production might be half that of his earlier years. But unlike women, who experience an abrupt drop in estrogen levels, testosterone levels in the male body wane gradually. Some don’t even notice a change in how they feel until relatively late in life.
Time, however, is not the only factor that changes hormone composition. Hypothyroidism is a condition that frequently goes unnoticed until major symptoms appear. It, too, influences hormone production as the body goes haywire without a seemingly logical explanation.
The problems you’re experiencing suggest hypothyroidism, the medical term for low or underactive thyroids. Although society is obsessed with preserving good health, it’s unusual that a discussion be devoted to the thyroid. Talk instead focuses on the heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys – and with good reason. But the thyroid also deserves fair attention.
The thyroid – a small, butterfly-shaped organ – releases the hormones T4 and T3 responsible for such activities as metabolism, energy, development, and growth. These hormones work in synergy with testosterone produced by the testes. A dearth in T4 or T3, as occurs with hypothyroidism, will affect many functions because the body’s chemicals are all so closely related. This is why you feel lethargic and cannot achieve an erection.
How Hypothyroidism Influences Testosterone

Until December 2005, the relationship between hypothyroidism and erectile dysfunction (ED) was not well understood. This changed when researchers concluded more than half of men with hypothyroidism suffer delayed ejaculation, loss of libido and ED. The connection is so strong that some health care professionals no longer believe ED is the result of normal aging. Rather, they suggest impotence always accompanies other diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure and hypothyroidism.
What remains unclear is exactly why underactive thyroid leads to ED. The connection is believed to lie in the body’s changed chemistry. Low or stopped production of hormones T4 and T3 leads to testosterone depletion. Remember, the body operates normally only when its chemicals are balanced. Too much or too little of one hormone will adversely affect the levels of another. In addition, by the time hypothyroidism makes itself known, most men are preoccupied with their symptoms and give little thought to their sex lives.
Regain the Health of Your Youth

To combat the symptoms of hypothyroidism, you should increase your nutritional intake of selenium and iodine. The former can be found in such foods as turkey, salmon, tuna, and scallops. Dairy products, seafood and eggs are rich in iodine.
A healthy diet will make you feel better but probably will not alleviate erectile dysfunction. But don’t worry – we have a suggestion for that, too. An herbal remedy that contains Cnidium can boost erections and increase libido. (SEE: Cnidium for Erection Revitalization) Here’s how.
Cnidium elevates the body’s testosterone levels and directs blood to the penis. It is highly beneficial when ingested alone, but when combined with other herbs in a botanical remedy, the healing abilities of Cnidium are significantly magnified. You’ll notice improved sexual stamina and increased energy, both to power your performance in the bedroom.
